Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum toxin is used to treat problems such as neck spasms (cervical dystonia), excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), overactive bladder and lazy eye. Botox injections may also help prevent chronic migraines. Botulinum toxin injections use a toxin known as onobotulinumtoxinA to temporarily prevent a muscle from moving.

This toxin is produced by a microorganism that causes botulism, a type of food poisoning.

Botulinum toxin injections block certain chemical signals from nerves, primarily the signals that cause muscles to contract. The most common use of these injections is to temporarily relax facial muscles that cause wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes. Botox injections are also used to treat diseases that affect the functioning of the body.

For example:

  • Cervical dystonia. In this painful disorder, the neck muscles contract involuntarily, causing the head to twist or turn to an awkward position.

  • Lazy eye (amblyopia). The most common cause of amblyopia is an imbalance in the muscles that are responsible for putting the eye in position.

  • Muscle contractures. Some neurological disorders, such as cerebral palsy, can cause the limbs to turn in toward the center of the body. In some cases, these contracted muscles can be relaxed with Botox injections.

  • Hyperhidrosis. This disorder is characterized by excessive sweating even when the temperature is not high and you are not exerting yourself.

  • Chronic migraine. If you experience migraines more than 15 days per month, Botox injections can help reduce the frequency of headaches.

  • Bladder dysfunction. Botox injections can also help reduce urinary incontinence caused by an overactive bladder.

  • Eye pulsations. Botox injections can help relieve contractures or pulsations of the muscles around the eyes.
