Augmentation mammoplasty or breast augmentation is a surgery performed to increase the size of the breasts. Sometimes it is performed with the placement of breast implants or with fat grafting of the same patient (lipofilling).

Why is it done?

Many people decide to opt for breast augmentation if:

  • They have inequalities after previous breast surgery.

  • They have lost volume after pregnancy or lactation.

  • They have lost a significant amount of weight.

  • They desire a more voluminous appearance.

What is the surgery like?

This procedure usually lasts between 1 and 2 hours. Once the patient is under anesthesia, the plastic specialist will make a cut in one of these places:

  • Under the arm

  • Under or inside the areola

  • Under the breast

Once this incision is made, the breast tissue is separated from the muscles and the tissue that connects to the thorax, and the implant is placed in the cavity that is formed behind or in front of the pectoral muscle. It is necessary to center the implant just behind the nipple.

After the implant is in the proper position, the incision is closed.

Care

Some of the indications for post-operative care are listed below. First of all, it is recommended to follow the plastic surgeon's instructions.

  • Smoking is not recommended. Smoking slows healing by decreasing blood circulation.

  • Use the recommended special bra or bandage.

  • Do not drive and, when traveling by car, position the belt so that it does not squeeze the breasts.

  • Avoid strenuous or tiring activities for at least two weeks. That is, any activity that can increase blood pressure.

  • Do not raise your arms above your breasts for 10 days. Also do not strain if the object to be lifted, pulled or pushed weighs more than 4.5 kg.

Risks

Like any other surgical procedure, augmentation mammoplasty may present side effects or risks to take into account. Some of these are:

  • Chest pain.

  • Bleeding or infection.

  • Stiffness of the breasts.

  • Changes in nipple and/or breast sensation

  • Implant rupture

  • Changes in the position of the implants

It is important to maintain the care and recommendations given by the plastic surgeon to avoid any damage or opening of the wounds. Usually, it is advisable to have an MRI every two or three years to detect any rupture or tear of the silicone breast implants. It is also recommended to consult with the surgeon in case you feel any abnormality.
